Snowshoe Mountain Announces Special February & March Offers
Groundhog reinforces strong finish to winter
Friday, February 4, 2012—Snowshoe, West Virginia –Snowshoe Mountain, which benefited from colder temperatures for snowmaking last night and more natural snow this past weekend, is announcing fresh new deals and events for February and March. In spite of a milder than usual winter, Snowshoe continues to feature more open terrain and the best conditions in the region since it opened in early December. The resort is currently featuring 54 trails on over 200 acres of open terrain.
According to Mark Glickman, Vice President of Marketing for Snowshoe Mountain, “It’s hard for people to imagine when it’s been in the 50’s and 60’s in their backyard, that Snowshoe has as much snow as we do. But because of our location and elevation at 4848’, our temperatures are often 10-20 degrees colder here, and with our snowmaking capacity and aggressive approach to snowmaking, we’ve been able to make a tremendous amount of snow. Our guests are amazed when they arrive at Snowshoe to see how much snow and terrain we have open and are excited about our great conditions”

Snowshoe Mountain's Scientific Neighbor Keeps An Eye On The Sky
On Tuesday, November 8th, scientists at the Green Bank facility spent hours diligently observing data related to an asteroid.
When guests visit Snowshoe Mountain Resort, they are often seen wandering aimlessly through the resort's Village, cell phone pointed to the sky, a puzzled look on their face. Located in Pocahontas County, W. Va., Snowshoe is in a federally mandated quiet zone encompassing nearly 13,000 square miles, created to minimize possible harmful radio interference, which causes guests' usually busy electronic devices to fall mostly silent during their visit to the picturesque resort. The quiet zone is in place to help protect the work being done just off the mountain at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank, W. Va., also in Pocahontas County. Green Bank's NRAO facility, one of several NRAO research centers located around the United States, is home to the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope, the largest fully steerable dish in the world.
For most guests, knowledge of the NRAO doesn't extend beyond a few days without text messages, but the observatory's work goes far beyond the quiet zone. On Tuesday, November 8th, scientists at the Green Bank facility spent hours diligently observing data related to an asteroid, calculated to be the size of an air craft carrier, which passed between the Earth and the Moon. While the asteroid was reported to be some 200,000 miles from the Earth's surface, scientists at the NRAO were able to collect some fascinating data from the specimen, in work that was a team effort with other facilities around the world.
Snowshoe Mountain producer Ed Schneider visited with some of the NRAO's brightest minds on Tuesday to learn more about the work being done in Green Bank, and specifically the tracking of this enormous space rock.
Another Foot of Fresh Snow, Around-The-Clock Snowmaking at Snowshoe Mountain Resort
With ski season just less than a month away, Mother Nature has already turned the region's #1 resort into a winter wonderland.
Ski season is just over a month away, with Opening Day planned for November 23rd at Snowshoe Mountain Resort, but Mother Nature must already be thinking winter, as the Pocahontas County, W. Va. resort saw another foot of natural snowfall this weekend. More than 20" of natural snow has now fallen in the month of October, an early start to a winter season that typically averages 180" of snowfall at Snowshoe.
Snowmaking Season Has Begun at Snowshoe Mountain
More natural snow in the forecast for the weekend.

The snowguns are working their magic and Mother Nature is assisting in a big way, with up to another 9" of snow predicted for this weekend.
The calendar still reads October, but it's looking more like Winter at Snowshoe Mountain. The Pocahontas County, W.Va. resort kicked off the snowmaking season on Thursday, as overnight temperature plunged into the 20's. By mid-morning Friday temperatures and humidity levels had risen just enough that the snowmaking equipment was given a break, but with temperatures dropping throughout the day, snowmaking could resume by late afternoon and should continue through the night. In addition, to the man-made snow being pumped out across the mountain, Mother nature is also expected to drop some of the white stuff on Snowshoe this weekend. Natural snow is expected to begin falling overnight Friday with as much as 9" of accumulations possible.
